Welcome to CATHOLIC CHARITIES – ST. AUGUSTINE REGIONAL OFFICE. Since 1975, we have provided assistance to residents of St. Johns, Putnam and Flagler counties. The St. Augustine Regional Office has shared in the mission and traditions of the Catholic Church since 1944. In December of 1975, the first “official” office was opened in St. Augustine by Father O’Flaherty. This office was housed at San Sebastian Catholic Church, located on State Road 16. In 1997, we moved into a larger facility on West King Street in downtown St. Augustine. As of April 2014, we had the privilege of moving and expanding our operation to Lewis Speedway, St. Augustine, and our most recent move in April 2021 to a bigger office at 525 FL-16, Suite 112, St. Augustine, Florida 32084.
Over the years, the St. Augustine Regional Office has grown into a multi-faceted agency that served more than 10,000 people in our surrounding communities last year, primarily families with minor children, senior citizens and individuals in need. Our programs and services include Emergency Assistance with Rent/Mortgage and Utility Bills, Emergency Food Assistance and Weekend Hunger Backpack Program. Our services are offered to all people regardless of religious affiliation, gender, race or ethnic origin.
Now more than ever, individuals and families in crisis are looking for assistance to pay their monthly bills. They are struggling to keep food on the table and to make ends meet. They are looking for help. In order to continue serving our growing clientele, we need the support of caring citizens. PLEASE HELP US TO HELP THEM. We are several months into what can only be described as truly extraordinary times. The COVID-19 pandemic has created unexpected challenges impacting our daily lives in a myriad of ways. Throughout this difficult time, Catholic Charities has been blessed by tremendous community support. We want to thank you for your support as we continue to find a balance between the magnitude off this pandemic and providing the much-needed services to our community.
COVID-19 has forced many organizations to rethink the way they operate, and Catholic Charities was not exempt from this new reality. Using guidance provided from the CDC, the State of Florida and local governments, Catholic Charities took quick action to adjust, keeping staff and clients safe while continuing to provide critical services. Most of our staff have been moved to virtual work. For the services where we cannot work virtually, such as our food pantries, we have established safety protocols, which include the mandatory use of masks, physical distancing, temperature checks, and enhanced cleaning procedures.
Moving forward we will continue with our new safety practices to help ensure the safety of our staff and clients. Our leadership meets on a regular basis to assess our practices and to discuss plans for moving to a “new normal”. As we continue to adapt to our new realty, we will continue to provide information and updates, as necessary. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people effected by COVID-19 and the essential workers providing much needed services. Be encouraged with the knowledge that you are not alone, and that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). Living in times of uncertainty is never easy. How is Catholic Charities ensuring the safety of its staff and clients?
- Virtual Work: Catholic Charities has shifted all nonessential employees to working virtually.
- In Person Work: When virtual work is not possible we have established the following procedures:
- Social Distancing:Staff and clients put six feet of distance between themselves and other people.
- Masks and Face Covers:Staff and clients are required to cover their mouth and nose with a cloth face cover in common areas or when around others. Masks are provided as needed.
- Personal Hygiene:Staff are encouraged to wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer, especially after they have been in a public place.
- Symptom Monitoring:Staff are to be alert for symptoms, including fever, cough, and/or shortness of breath. Staff monitor their temperature daily are not allowed to come to work when displaying symptoms.
- Avoidance of Large Gatherings: At this time, we are following CDC guidance and there are no large gatherings of staff or clients.
- Enhanced Cleaning: Additional and enhanced cleaning is taking place in common spaces and areas where there are frequently touched surfaces, including hallways, stairways, and restrooms.
- Client Safety: Masks are required for clients receiving in person services. Masks are provided to those who need masks.
- Hand Sanitizer: Hand sanitizer and disinfectant is available at all locations.
What if I have concerns about COVID safety at Catholic Charities?
- Staff and clients should take immediate concerns to the Regional Directors attention.
How are decisions being made about reopening?
- Catholic Charities’ leadership is closely monitoring and following developments related to COVID-19 and will continue to make well-informed decisions regarding providing operations.
When with Catholic Charities return to normal operations?
- At this time, we do not have a time frame for when normal operations will resume.
